While the Romani sing a lot about romantic love, they also sing about everything - and we mean, everything - else. It would be a true challenge to find a human emotion or situation that doesn’t exist in Roma music. “What mother are you?”, performed in traditional Balkan folklore style by Romani band “Amalipe”, is a song by an orphan who’s lost one parent to death, and one to abandonment and a cold heart. This recording is made available by the Amalipe Center for Interethnic Dialogue and Tolerance. You can find it on their YouTube channel along with many other Roma songs. Our translation into English is below.
