A folklore song of the Romani across the Balkans, “Ederlezi” is a song about the traditional May 6 celebration of the arrival of spring, also celebrated as St. George’s Day among Christians and Hıdırellez among Muslims. The song is translated and sung in Bulgarian, Greek, Turkish, Polish, and Serbian, among others. It was made widely popular by Goran Bregović in the Emir Kusturica movie “Time of the Gypsies.” The version we share below is performed by the Bulgarian Roma singer Sofi Marinova.
